Work belonging to the Serie Liberté (1970), one of the most significant sets of the late graphic production of Joan Miró, where the artist reaches a radical synthesis between gesture, sign and poetic thought. This piece, moreover, being number 10 of a series of 10, represents the closing of a particularly coherent visual cycle. The series is linked to his collaboration with the poet Alain Jouffroy for the book Liberté des libertés (1971), establishing a direct dialogue between image and word. At this time, Miró adopts an essential and calligraphic language, influenced by Zen aesthetics and abstract expressionism, without abandoning his personal symbolism.
The composition is structured by means of a powerful black frame in India ink, drawn with a free gesture that delimits a dynamic interior space. In the center, a vertical sign close to the shape of an arrow suggests impulse, direction or elevation, in consonance with the idea of freedom. The orange wax outline introduces a vibrant, almost primal energy that intensifies the tension between control and spontaneity.
The inclusion of the work in the exhibition "Miró. L'oeuvre graphique" (Musée d'Art de la Ville de Paris, 1974) confirms its relevance, while the certificate of Jacques Dupin, the artist's leading scholar, attests to its authenticity. Because of its serial nature, its documentation and its expressive force, it is a particularly representative example of the most refined Miró, sought after by collectors and institutions.
Internationally acclaimed following the retrospective that the MOMA in New York dedicated to him in 1941, Joan Miró has received awards such as the Grand Prizes of the Venice Biennale and the Guggenheim Foundation, the Carnegie Prize for Painting, the Gold Medals of the Generalitat de Catalunya, etc. His work can currently be seen at the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona, as well as in major contemporary art museums around the world, such as the Thyssen-Bornemisza, the MoMA in New York, the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, the National Gallery in Washington or the MNAM in Paris.
