DESCRIPTION

FERNANDO BOTERO (Colombia, 1932-2023).
"Bailaora".
Graphite on paper.

Measurements: 44 × 35 cm; 82 × 68 cm (frame).

This original drawing by Fernando Botero presents a dancer, a motif that the artist approaches from his characteristic volumetric language, reinterpreting the tradition of flamenco through amplified and emphatic forms. The figure, captured in a contained instant, transmits more of a presence than a movement, underlining Botero's singular gaze on the body and representation.

The graphite, worked with a smooth and continuous line, allows us to clearly appreciate the formal construction: full volumes, altered proportions and a synthesis that dispenses with the accessory. Far from the anecdotal, the scene becomes an exercise in style where the popular -the dancer- is elevated to a timeless image.

The provenance of the Claude Bernard Gallery in Paris, closely linked to the international diffusion of the artist, reinforces the interest of the work within his graphic production, where Botero developed with special clarity the foundations of his language.

Fernando Botero is the most recognized figure of contemporary Colombian art and the creator of an unmistakable figurative language, defined by the expansion of volume as an expressive principle. Trained between Colombia and Europe -with stays in Madrid, Paris and Florence-, he assimilated both the classical tradition and the avant-garde, developing since the late fifties a fully personal style.

His work is preserved in some of the world's leading institutions, such as the Metropolitan Museum, the MoMA and the Guggenheim in New York, the Botero Museum in Bogota and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, and also has an outstanding presence in public spaces in cities such as Paris, Madrid and New York.
