Within the plastic universe of Joan Miró, the Constellations constitute one of the most recognizable and poetic languages of his career. In this work, the artist articulates a vibrant space where black signs of free stroke float on a textured background, generating a composition in balance between chance and control. The organic forms, almost biomorphic, dialogue with dots, lines and symbols that evoke an intimate cosmos, typical of Miró's iconography.
The manual intervention in watercolor -with seven touches of color applied directly by the artist- makes this work a singular piece within the edition. The intense and contrasting chromatic accents activate the surface and reinforce the playful and sensorial dimension of the image, providing a unique quality that transcends the graphic character of the etching.
Printed by Mourlot and Daniel Jacomet et Cie. and published by Pierre Matisse in New York, this work is inscribed in a moment of full creative maturity of Miró, when his language reaches an absolute synthesis between gesture, sign and color. The reference in Cramer's catalog raisonné and its status as proof of the artist reinforce its relevance both in the historiographic field and in the market, where graphic works intervened by Miró himself occupy a particularly prominent place.
Joan Miró trained in Barcelona and made his debut in 1918 at the Dalmau Galleries. In 1920 he moved to Paris, where he came into contact with the avant-garde and developed his own language influenced by surrealism. His international recognition was soon consolidated: in 1928 the MoMA acquired his works and in 1941 dedicated a great retrospective to him.
Throughout his career he received important distinctions and his work was widely disseminated in Europe and the United States. He is currently represented in institutions such as the Joan Miró Foundation (Barcelona), the MoMA (New York), the Reina Sofía Museum (Madrid), the National Gallery of Art (Washington) and the Centre Pompidou (Paris), among others.
