DESCRIPTION
HEINRICH ZILLE (Radeburg, Germany, 1858 - Berlin, Germany, 1929)
"Woman with Stroller," ca. 1900-1920.
Waxes on paper.
Signed at the bottom.
Measurements: 16.5 x 11 cm.
Agile drawing made with crayons. The figure of the mother, next to the baby carriage, is resolved with fast and expressive stroke, combining black lines of contour with chromatic touches that contribute vivacity to the scene. The composition responds to Heinrich Zille's interest in popular types and everyday life in Berlin, treated with a direct, spontaneous and close look.
Heinrich Zille was a German cartoonist, illustrator, photographer and engraver, especially known for his scenes of popular life in Berlin. His work focused on working-class neighborhoods, their inhabitants and their everyday environments, which he represented with an agile, incisive language and a strong human charge. Linked to the Berlin Secession, he developed a very recognizable graphic production, between social chronicle, humor and critical observation. His work is represented, among other institutions, at the Zille Museum in Berlin and the Berlinische Galerie.
