A work of great formal refinement, created at a particularly significant moment in Antoni Tàpies’ career, when his material and gestural language reached an extraordinary maturity. In “Forca,” the artist reduces the composition to a few essential elements: diluted stains, ink strokes, pencil lines, and signs suspended over the emptiness of the paper.
The work brings together some of the most characteristic motifs of Tàpies’s universe: the cross, the circle, the triangle, the line, and the calligraphic presence of the letter or initial. These signs do not function as closed symbols, but as open presences, charged with spiritual, bodily, and existential resonances. The cross can be understood as a mark, a boundary, or a point of tension; the circle refers to the idea of totality and cycle; the triangle introduces an ascending structure, while the letter “A,” a recurring element in his work, links the artist’s identity with the notion of origin, beginning, and writing.
The composition stands out for its extreme economy of means and for the intensity with which Tàpies transforms the paper into a space for visual thought. The areas of gray and black ink, the reddish stroke, and the barely hinted-at lines generate an image that is both fragile and powerful, where each gesture acquires the value of a sign. The result is a silent, essential work that is deeply representative of his exploration of matter, the sign, and the spiritual dimension of painting.
Antoni Tàpies is one of the leading figures in European art of the second half of the 20th century and the foremost exponent of Informalism in Spain. A co-founder of the Dau al Set group, he developed his own language based on material and gestural experimentation, integrating symbolic elements with a strong spiritual and existential charge. His work is held in institutions such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid), the MACBA (Barcelona), and the Fondation Maeght (Saint-Paul-de-Vence), among many others. A recipient of the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale and the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts, his graphic work constitutes a fundamental chapter in his career and remains in high demand on the international market.
