DESCRIPTION

FRANCISKA CLAUSEN (Aabenraa, Denmark, 1899–1986).
Untitled, 1926.
Marker on paper.
Signed and dated on the lower part.
Provenance: the artist’s family.
Measurements: 26.5 x 19 cm.

In this work on paper, Franciska Clausen creates a composition of great geometric tension using diagonal lines, vertical axes, circles, rectangular planes, and semicircular shapes. The image is organized through an almost architectural structure, where magenta, blue, and orange elements intersect and overlap against the light background, creating a sense of unstable equilibrium and restrained movement.

The piece stands out for its compositional clarity and for its use of a formal vocabulary closely linked to European modernism of the interwar period. The red lines, which run across the paper as if they were rods or tension wires, construct a sort of visual framework, while the circular shapes and planes of color introduce rhythm and counterpoint. Unlike the artist’s other, more expansive compositions, here an internal, almost mechanical logic of construction prevails, reflecting Clausen’s interest in abstraction, geometry, and the dynamic possibilities of the plane.

Dated 1926, the work belongs to one of the most important periods in Franciska Clausen’s career, coinciding with her years of direct contact with the avant-garde circles of Paris. Her artistic language is related to Constructivism, Purism, and geometric abstraction—movements that the artist assimilated from a personal perspective, combining formal rigor, color, and a sense of movement.

Franciska Clausen was one of the pioneering figures of the 20th-century Danish avant-garde. Trained in Germany, Denmark, and France, she studied at the Weimar School of Art—the precursor to the Bauhaus—and was a student of Alexander Archipenko, Hans Hofmann, László Moholy-Nagy, and Fernand Léger. In 1926, the same year this work was created, her work was selected by Marcel Duchamp and Katherine Dreier for an exhibition organized by the Société Anonyme in New York, confirming her early international recognition.

Her work is represented in institutions such as the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen, Museum Sønderjylland / Brundlund Castle, and Fuglsang Kunstmuseum. Given its early date, its family provenance, and its connection to the artist’s most experimental period, this piece constitutes a particularly significant testament to European abstraction of the interwar period.
