FRANCISKA CLAUSEN (Aabenraa, Denmark, 1899–1986).
Untitled, 1926.

As is typical in her other works from the 1920s, Franciska Clausen employs a multiplicity of planes and angular forms here. The composition appears to unfold as a faceted structure, in which each color occupies a precise place within a vibrant and carefully articulated whole. The presence of arcs, parallel lines, and small decorative motifs adds rhythm to the image and reinforces its experimental character.
Created within the context of the European avant-garde of the 1920s, the work engages with Constructivism, Purism, Cubism, and geometric abstraction. The use of marker on paper allows Clausen to work with great immediacy, combining the precision of the line with the manual intensity of the color. The piece demonstrates her interest in transforming geometry into an active visual experience, where structure, movement, and color are integrated into a single artistic exploration.
Franciska Clausen was one of the pioneering figures of the 20th-century Danish avant-garde. Trained in Germany, Denmark, and France, she studied at the Weimar School of Art—the precursor to the Bauhaus—and was a student of Alexander Archipenko, Hans Hofmann, László Moholy-Nagy, and Fernand Léger. In 1926, the same year this work was created, her work was selected by Marcel Duchamp and Katherine Dreier for an exhibition organized by the Société Anonyme in New York.
Her work is represented in institutions such as the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen, Museum Sønderjylland / Brundlund Castle, and Fuglsang Kunstmuseum. Due to its early date, its family provenance, and its compositional intensity, this piece constitutes a particularly significant example of Franciska Clausen’s most experimental work.
