BALDOMER GALOFRE I XIMENIS (Reus, 1846–Barcelona, 1902).
"Couple."

A watercolor on paper in which Baldomer Galofre depicts a romantic scene featuring a couple next to a fountain or architectural garden feature. The composition, in a narrow, vertical format, focuses attention on the two figures, rendered with great lightness of touch. The woman is dressed in a light-colored gown in shades of blue and pink, while the man leans toward her in an attitude of intimate conversation, creating a scene of a gentle and refined character.
The work stands out for the delicacy of the wash and the economy of means with which the artist suggests atmosphere, gesture, and clothing. The vegetative backgrounds, barely hinted at through green and ochre washes, envelop the scene without detracting from the figures’ prominence. Galofre employs subtle transparencies and precise chromatic touches to render the folds of the dress, the shadow cast by the figures, and the luminous atmosphere of the garden, achieving an image of great freshness and spontaneity.
The work reflects a penchant for Italian genre and atmospheric scenes that characterized much of Galofre’s output, linked to the artistic context of the second half of the 19th century and echoing the style of Fortuny’s painting. Rather than a self-contained narrative scene, the work functions as an evocation of a fleeting moment: a conversation, a frozen gesture, a visual impression captured with speed and sensitivity.
Baldomer Galofre i Ximenis was a painter and illustrator who trained in Barcelona under the influence of Ramon Martí Alsina and later became closely associated with the circle of Marià Fortuny. As a scholarship recipient in Rome, he resided in Italy for a long time, where he developed a body of work characterized by a penchant for watercolor, drawing, landscape, and popular themes. His work is represented in institutions such as the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC), the Museo Nacional del Prado, and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Argentina, among other public collections.
