In this watercolor, Tapiró depicts a seated Italian peasant woman dressed in traditional attire. She conveys a serene, everyday demeanor, reminiscent of the studies of folk types that so fascinated artists trained in the Roman art scene of the second half of the 19th century. The whites of the headdress and blouse are hallmarks of contrast with the deep blues of the skirt and the reddish accents of the bodice, creating a restrained and elegant chromatic harmony. The work is associated with the Italian period and the fascination with folk types shared by numerous Catalan artists linked to Fortuny’s circle.
Josep Tapiró i Baró was one of the great Catalan watercolorists of the 19th century and a leading figure in European Orientalism. Trained in Reus and Barcelona, he maintained a close friendship with Marià Fortuny, with whom he traveled to Rome and Morocco. In 1876, he settled in Tangier, where he produced works of great technical precision depicting North African figures, costumes, and settings. The Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya recognized his importance with the exhibition *Josep Tapiró*. Painter of Tangier, highlighting his role as one of the first artists from the Iberian Peninsula to settle in the Moroccan city. His work is represented in institutions such as the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC) and the Museo Nacional del Prado.
