LUIS FEITO (Madrid, 1929 – Rascafría, Madrid, 2021)
Untitled.
Watercolor and ink on paper.
Signed in the lower left corner.
Measurements: 49 x 62 cm; 63 x 73 cm with frame.
This work on paper showcases a gestural and synthetic aspect of Luis Feito’s art, centered on the energy of the stroke and the symbolic power of color. The composition is structured around a large, circular, enveloping red form, crossed by a horizontal black axis that introduces tension and balance into the image. In contrast to the organic expansion of the color field, the black line functions as an element of containment and structure, creating a characteristic contrast between gestural impulse and compositional order.
The work retains essential features of Feito’s abstract language: chromatic intensity, tension between form and void, and a conception of paper as a space for free and immediate experimentation.
Luis Feito was a key figure in postwar Spanish abstraction and a founding member of the El Paso group in 1957. Trained at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts, he lived for years in Paris, where he came into contact with European Informalism.
His work is represented in the Reina Sofía Museum, the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art in Cuenca, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Centre Pompidou, and other international collections.
