This work is a sketch for Maïrel No. 1, one of Luis Feito’s best-known public sculptures, which occupies a prominent place on the esplanade of Montreal’s Place des Arts, where it was installed in 1979. The presence of this sculpture in Montreal was no accident. Feito maintained a close relationship with the city, where he lived and worked between 1981 and 1983, and exhibited at various Canadian institutions. His work was very well received in Quebec, which explains the inclusion of *Maïrel No. 1* in the urban landscape and the presence of other works by him in the city’s collections.
After settling in Paris in the late 1950s, Feito gained significant international recognition, participating in numerous exhibitions and biennials. His work is represented in some of the world’s leading public collections, including the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, and the Guggenheim Museum.
