DESCRIPTION
MANUEL ALCORLO (Madrid, 1935–2026).
“Calves,” 1964.
Ink on paper.
Signed, dated, and titled in the lower right corner.
The work was transferred from cellophane to paper; this process is visible on the surface.
Measurements: 16 x 20 cm; 33 x 40 cm (with frame).
Using rapid, nervous line work, Alcorlo depicts several calves gathered around the body of a cow. The economy of means does not prevent a precise observation of the anatomies, constructed through broken contours, overlapping strokes, and brief shading.
Manuel Alcorlo studied at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts and was a fellow at the Spanish Academy in Rome. A member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando since 1998, he has had an extensive career as a painter, draftsman, and printmaker. His work is represented in the National Library, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Toledo, and the Museum of Drawing in Huesca.
