"Cousas da vida" is one of Castelao’s most representative graphic series, in which the artist portrayed the daily life of the Galician working classes with humor, tenderness, and a critical eye. His drawings combine an extreme economy of means with brief dialogues that expand the meaning of the image and transform a seemingly anecdotal situation into a reflection of social significance.

In this scene, two men converse in a rural setting barely suggested by a few lines. The expressiveness is concentrated in the faces, while the caption introduces an irony linked to the land, emigration, and precariousness. Castelao manages to condense into a single, simple image themes such as attachment to one’s homeland, poverty, economic uncertainty, and the dignity of humble people.

The drawing is characterized by a confident, concise, and deliberately anti-rhetorical line. The absence of shading and extraneous elements enhances the clarity of the scene and reveals the artist’s experience as a cartoonist and illustrator.

Castelao was a cartoonist, painter, writer, essayist, and politician, and a central figure in 20th-century Galician culture. He was actively involved in the Irmandades da Fala, the Seminario de Estudos Galegos, and the Galicianist Party, and produced graphic and literary works closely tied to the defense of the Galician language and identity. His legacy is prominently preserved at the Museum of Pontevedra.
