BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
GERARD VAN DEN BERG (Holland, 1947) for Stokke Farikk Spjelkavik.
Pair of chairs, 1960s.
Beech wood frame.
Upholstered in cream white fabric.
Measurements: 75 x 61 x 50 cm.; 45 cm. seat height.
Set of two chairs designed by Gerard Van der Berg for Stokke Farikk Spjelkavik in the sixties. Executed in beech wood, these pieces stand out for their refined formal economy and careful balance between functionality and warmth. The structure has straight front legs and slightly sloping rear legs, giving dynamism to the silhouette. A subtle curvature at the transition between the crossbar and the armrest lends fluidity to the design, softening the geometric rigor of the whole. The clean lines and expressive use of wood underscore the Nordic aesthetic characteristic of the period.
Gerard Van der Berg paved the way for a renaissance of Dutch design, becoming an important figure in the promotion of Dutch furniture abroad. Trained in furniture construction and design at a technical school, in the 1970s he and his brother founded the upholstered furniture company Montis, which soon achieved international recognition. His success did not prevent van den Berg from leaving Montis in the early 1990s. Throughout his career he has received numerous prizes and awards, and works for the most important international companies. In addition to furniture, he also designs lamps and works in interior design.
