BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Attributed to ROBERT MATHIEU (France).
Wall lamp, ca. 1950.
With 2 ball joints.
Lacquered perforated aluminum cones and brass body. It has slight marks on the lacquer.
Measurements: 41x20x20 cm.

This piece is a magnificent example of mid-century French lighting, noted for its balance between functionality and sculptural aesthetics. It has two conical shades of asymmetrical "diabolo" style, made of white lacquered aluminum. The rim of the larger cones features a pattern of circular punctures. This is a classic detail from the 1950s (often used by designers such as Mathieu or Guariche) that allows light to escape creating a decorative "star points" effect on the walls, in addition to direct illumination.

Equipped with two brass ball joints that connect the arms to the shades. This mechanism allows each light cone to be directed independently, providing focused or ambient lighting as desired.

Robert Mathieu was one of the most prominent French lighting designers of the post-war period. His designs are often characterized by clever use of perforated metal, double conical shapes and high quality brass joints, competing in style and quality with contemporaries such as Pierre Guariche or Serge Mouille.
