DESCRIPTION
MARIO BELLINI (Milan, 1935) for Artemide.
Pair of table lamps model "Area", Italy, 1970s.
Lacquered metal and thermoformed plastic diffuser.
In very good state of preservation.
Measurements: 84 x 64 x 46 cm.
Iconic design by Mario Bellini for the Italian firm Artemide, representative of the experimental spirit of Italian design of the 1970s. The lamps feature a white lacquered tubular structure that describes an elegant arc from a cylindrical base in contrast, supporting a central diffuser.
The most characteristic element of the model is the diffuser in thermoformed synthetic material, with an undulating and organic profile, which envelops the light source generating a soft and enveloping illumination. This plastic surface treatment and the expressive use of industrial materials reflect Bellini's interest in exploring new formal possibilities in lighting design.
Mario Bellini achieved early international success, both in the field of architecture and in urban planning and furniture design. In 1987 the Museum of Modern Art, which includes twenty-five of his works in its collection, dedicated a retrospective exhibition to him. Bellini has collaborated with major European and American design firms, including Artemide, Vitra and Flos. He has been awarded eight Compasso d'Oro and the Gold Medal for his work by the President of the Republic of Italy.
