BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Brutalist coffee table, ca. 1980.
Steel with oxidized finish (possibly corten or patinated steel). Clear glass top.
Two small pits in two of the corners of the glass.
Measurements: 90 x 90 x 45 cm.

Coffee table of strong sculptural character, made of steel with oxidized finish -possibly corten or patinated steel- and transparent glass top. Its structure combines a tubular base with a lower metal shelf and a side resolved by three triangular planes that provide geometric forcefulness. With a brutalist aesthetic with postmodern echoes, it stands out for the contrast between the solidity of the metal and the lightness of the glass.

Brutalism, which emerged in architecture during the postwar period and reached its peak in the 1950s and 1960s, is characterized by the honest exposition of materials and structures, emphasizing formal simplicity and an aesthetic of "strength" that rejects the superfluous. Although Brutalism is commonly associated with exposed concrete in buildings, its principles carried over to furniture as well, where solid, volumetric forms convey a sense of permanence and solidity.
