Like an organic form in the process of opening, this Maison Rougier lamp unfolds a sequence of curved volumes that evoke seashells -hence the name Shell-, generating a fluid silhouette with a marked sculptural presence.
The translucent methacrylate sheets, in pearlescent shades, envelop the light source and transform it into a warm, enveloping glow. When lit, the piece takes on an almost ethereal quality: the light seems to emerge from within, revealing veins and shades that intensify its material richness.
Active in France during the 1960s and 1970s, Maison Rougier fits into the context of Space Age design and the rise of new synthetic materials. Its luminaires, conceived as true sculptural objects, stand out for their combination of biomorphic shapes and innovative lighting effects, in tune with the sophisticated interiors of the time.
Models like these, increasingly present on the international 20th century design market, are especially valued for their ability to transform space, combining functionality, formal experimentation and an unmistakable decorative character.
