The distinguished architect Toyo Ito designed this sculptural bench made of laminated wood composed of five species (maple, beech, cherry, walnut and iroko), worked by three-dimensional milling to generate a continuous undulating surface. As we can see, the Ripples model is distinguished by its organic relief and the presence of concentric circles that are integrated into the structure, evoking the soft vibrations of water. The piece reflects Ito's research into fluid phenomena and the perception of space translated into furniture design. Made by superimposing layers of carved wood, the bench generates a dynamic effect both visually and tactilely, establishing itself as one of the author's most emblematic designs.
Toyo Ito is considered "one of the world's most innovative and influential architects". On March 17, 2013 he was awarded the Pritzker Prize, the highest distinction in the world of architecture. A few of his early works comprise the Silver Hut and the furniture for Tokyo's Nomad Girl. His work has explored the physical image of the city of the digital age. As he explains in writings such as The Microchip Garden. The Image of Architecture in the Microelectronic Age or Towards the Architecture of Wind, the urban experience of the contemporary city takes place in two reference spaces. One of his most important works, the Sendai Media Library, explores the structures of connection and production of current knowledge. In a support that seeks structural integration, with an original treatment to the vertical supports, which pretend the appearance of vegetation in an aquatic environment.
