BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Coffee table attributed to TOM DIXON (Tunisia, 1959), late 20th century-early 21st century.
Black lacquered metal and plexiglass.
Excellent general condition.
Measurements: 45 x 118 x 90 cm.

Sculptural structure in black lacquered metal, composed of a complex grid of welded rods that generate geometric volumes of architectural character. Rectangular cover in transparent methacrylate (Plexiglas), which allows to appreciate the base as a protagonist element. The set refers to the experimental and industrial language characteristic of contemporary British design, close to the productions of Tom Dixon.

A self-taught designer in London in the 1980s and head of the Habitat and Artek firms, Tom Dixon has combined creativity with commercial vision throughout his career. Born in Tunisia and raised in London, Dixon entered the design field accidentally, when he found himself with time on his hands while recovering from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. In previous years he had begun and abandoned artistic studies, so he lacked technical training, but acquired it on his own when he discovered welding while trying to fix his motorcycle himself. With this new knowledge he started making post-punk style designs in the early eighties, mainly furniture pieces built by welding, such as the "S Chair" or the "Pylon Chair". Soon he opened his own store, "Space", and began to manufacture his designs through the company Eurolounge. His success will be such that he will be hired by the Finnish firm Habitat as head designer, and from his new position he will re-edit designs by Verner Panton, Ettore Sottsas and Robin Day, as well as editing new creations by designers such as Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Ineke Hans and Marc Newson. In parallel, he will initiate projects as an independent designer and as creative director of Artek, the Finnish design firm founded by Alvar Aalto in the thirties. His creations are currently part of important collections such as the Design Museum in London and the MoMA in New York, among others.
