The lamp in tender is an example of German modernism of the 1960s, clearly influenced by rationalism and the Bauhaus tradition.
Klaus Hempel was a German designer recognized mainly for his "mid-century modern" and "space age" style lighting and furniture creations during the 1960s and 1970s. Trained at the Berlin School of Fine Arts, he began his career working for the furniture firm Hülsta and later founded his own design studio in Munich in 1960, collaborating with major German companies such as BMW, Siemens and Miele. He is especially known for his lamps and lighting pieces for the firm Kaiser Leuchten, characterized by their geometric shapes, futuristic lines and functional elegance, today highly appreciated by collectors of vintage European design.
