Pair of lamps "Pulcino" by Sergio Mazza and Giuliana Gramigna for Quattrifolio, made in Italy around the 70s. This is an emblematic creation of the period in which Italian design focuses on the mastery of light and the precise use of materials.
Designed by this outstanding duo, the Pulcino combines a finely curved white lacquered sheet metal reflector with a cylindrical base in chromed metal. The ensemble reflects the Italian industrial know-how of the period, between clean lines and well thought-out functionality. The inclination of the diffuser, designed to direct the light without glare, is fully in line with the formal research of the Milanese publishers. The condition is very good. The chrome plating remains clean and uniform, and the white lacquer retains its regularity. The patina is light and consistent with pieces of this period.
Sergio Mazza (Milan, 1931) and Giuliana Gramigna (Italy, 1929) constitute one of the most significant collaborations in Italian design in the second half of the 20th century, especially in the field of lighting and furniture design. Their work together falls within the context of the post-war Italian industrial design boom, a period in which technical innovation and formal experimentation redefined the relationship between object, function and aesthetics.
Together, they collaborated on pieces that reflect the spirit of Italian design of the 1950s and 1960s, characterized by a combination of rationalism and formal elegance. Their creations, especially in the field of lighting, are distinguished by the purity of lines, attention to constructive detail and a sober but sophisticated aesthetic, in which function does not exclude the expressive value of the object.
