RAAK Amsterdam produced this lamp only for a short period, which makes it today a rare and highly sought after piece by collectors and vintage lighting enthusiasts. In its time, moreover, it was among the most exclusive and expensive models in the firm's catalog. The Ludiek ceiling lamp has a metal structure composed of 50 diffusers, each one formed by the combination of an aluminum cover and a plastic cover, creating a geometric composition of great sculptural and aesthetic strength. Inside it incorporates an E27 socket that emits a warm and especially enveloping light.
RAAK Design Team was the in-house creative team of the Dutch firm RAAK Amsterdam, a company founded in the 1950s and specializing in high-quality modern lighting. Rather than relying solely on famous individual designers, the company developed many of its lamps through a collective design team that worked with an experimental, industrial aesthetic closely tied to the European modernism of the 1960s and 1970s. Their pieces are characterized by the innovative use of glass, metal and geometric shapes, as well as a special attention to the effects of light and atmosphere. The work of the RAAK Design Team was important because it helped democratize modern design through functional yet sculptural luminaires, contributing to the international prestige of Dutch post-war design and making many of their lamps icons of mid-century and space age style.
