These armchairs, designed by Ueli Berger in the 1970s, are an excellent example of his approach to comfort, structural innovation and modern aesthetics. They feature an angular black lacquered wood frame supporting large, thickly padded leather cushions, creating an attractive contrast between the visual lightness of the frame and the generous, welcoming appearance of the seats. Their clean-lined design and sharp geometry reflect the influence of Swiss modernism, while the pronounced slope of the backrest and the spaciousness of the cushions offer an exceptional lounging experience. These pieces are particularly representative of Berger because they synthesize the principles that defined his work: functionality, constructive quality and a constant search for new solutions for contemporary furniture. Their importance lies in the fact that they are part of a generation of designs that redefined luxury in the 1970s, replacing traditional ornamentation with a combination of noble materials, ergonomics and a sophisticated yet relaxed aesthetic, making them today highly prized pieces by collectors of 20th century European design.
Ueli Berger was a Swiss industrial and furniture designer, recognized for his innovative work in modern design during the second half of the 20th century. Trained at the Zurich School of Applied Arts, he collaborated closely with important firms such as De Sede, Röthlisberger and Swiss Design, developing furniture characterized by functionality, constructive quality and an elegant, timeless aesthetic. Among his best-known creations is the DS-600 modular seating system, designed together with Eleonore Peduzzi Riva, Heinz Ulrich and Klaus Vogt for De Sede in 1972, an iconic piece composed of articulated modules that allow almost unlimited configurations. Their work is appreciated for combining technical innovation, comfort and a clear influence of contemporary Swiss design.
