PIERRE DARIEL (France, 1889–1953).
“Hendaye” model chair, France, ca. 1930.
Solid walnut wood and leather straps.
Adjustable backrest.
Measurements: 70 x 65 x 86 cm; armrest height: 63 cm; seat height: 40 cm.
“Hendaye” model armchair, designed by Pierre Dariel in the 1930s. Conceived as highly sturdy lounge chairs, it features a robust and highly distinctive structure, with wide, straight armrests and curved side supports that lend dynamism to the overall design.
Crafted from stained beech wood, with a seat and backrest made of interwoven leather straps, it combines visual lightness and flexibility while emphasizing the design’s functional character. The reclining backrest and seat allow for various positions, further enhancing the model’s functionality and comfort.
Initially specializing in garden furniture during the 1920s and early 1930s, Pierre Dariel later founded Maison Dolt on Rue Pierre Charron, near the Champs-Élysées. His work holds a prominent place in modern French furniture of the interwar period, with outdoor chairs preserved at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
