Floor lamp designed by Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira in 1972 for BD Barcelona Design—a firm founded that same year by a group of young Catalan architects—which was one of its first and most iconic products and its first internationally recognized commercial success. The structure, which can be disassembled, is crafted from chrome-plated iron rod that forms a continuous line of great elegance and formal tension: a vertical stem that rises from a tripod base and curves at a right angle toward the front, culminating in a diffuser with adjustable fins made of aluminum painted in matte silver-gray, which can be adjusted to direct the light with precision. The structure’s apparent fragility—which evokes the silhouette of the flamingo that gives the piece its name—is a hallmark of its versatility of use: it can illuminate a dining table, a bookshelf, or a painting, or serve as a reading light without disturbing those sharing the space.
The Flamingo embodies the principle of “simplism” that defines Siza Vieira’s architecture: a reduction to the essentials, where every element serves a specific function and nothing is superfluous.
Winner of the 1992 Pritzker Prize, Siza is one of the most influential architects of the 20th century.
