This lamp by Louis Sognot reflects the more organic and lighthearted side of mid-20th-century French design. Its cylindrical structure, formed by vertical bamboo rods and connecting rings, envelops an original fabric shade that filters the light with great warmth. The result is a piece with a sculptural presence, yet one that is at the same time understated and natural.
Bamboo, a material deeply characteristic of Sognot’s work in the 1940s and 1950s, lends rhythm, verticality, and an almost architectural quality, while the plant fiber and fabric soften the overall effect. When lit, the lamp creates an intimate atmosphere, in keeping with the modern taste for natural materials and enveloping ambient lighting.
Louis Sognot was a prominent French designer and interior decorator, active from the Art Deco period through the postwar era. Alongside Le Corbusier, Pierre Chareau, and Francis Jourdain, he designed the furniture for the offices of the Parisian newspaper *La Semaine*. He taught interior design at the École Boule. Although Sognot was part of the modern avant-garde, he always avoided what he himself called the “laboratory style,” opting instead for organic and artisanal designs.
