BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

SERGIO MAZZA (Milan, 1931) and GIULIANA GRAMIGNA (Italy, 1929) for Poltrona Frau.
Pair of armchairs, c. 1960.
Dyed blue leather.
Measurements: 75 x 94 x 85 cm (x2).
Pair of armchairs designed by Sergio Mazza and Giuliana Gramigna for the prestigious Italian firm Poltrona Frau, circa 1960. Upholstered entirely in dyed blue leather. Their design is characterized by generous, enveloping forms, with wide armrests featuring rounded lines and a cylindrical backrest that lends a sculptural appearance and extraordinary comfort. The purity of their forms, devoid of superfluous elements, highlights the excellence of the leatherwork—one of the hallmarks of Poltrona Frau, a firm internationally renowned for the quality of its craftsmanship since the early 20th century.
Sergio Mazza (Milan, 1931) and Giuliana Gramigna (Italy, 1929) represent one of the most significant collaborations in Italian design during the second half of the 20th century, particularly in the fields of lighting and furniture design. Their collaborative work is set against the backdrop of the postwar boom in Italian industrial design, a period in which technical innovation and formal experimentation redefined the relationship between object, function, and aesthetics.
Together, they collaborated on pieces that reflect the spirit of Italian design in the 1950s and 1960s, characterized by a combination of rationalism and formal elegance. Their creations, particularly in the field of lighting, are distinguished by the purity of their lines, attention to structural detail, and a restrained yet sophisticated aesthetic, in which function does not exclude the object’s expressive value.
