DESCRIPTION
Pair of Brutalist chairs; Spain, c. 1950.
Solid walnut, hand-carved and curved.
Measurements: 80 x 33 x 33 cm (x2); 41 cm (seat height).
A pair of chairs carved from solid walnut that stand out for their bold, geometric design with minimal ornamentation. The hand carving and the expressive grain of the walnut reinforce their unique and sculptural character, reflecting a philosophy of furniture design in which form arises directly from the qualities of the wood.
These characteristics link them to the language of Brutalism, a movement that, when applied to furniture design beginning in the 1950s and 1960s, championed the authenticity of materials, structural honesty, and the power of volumetric forms. Inspired by the principles of Brutalist architecture, this approach rejected superfluous ornamentation to highlight the texture, visual weight, and expressiveness of materials such as solid wood, concrete, and metal. In this context, these chairs represent an early interpretation of that sensibility, where functionality is combined with a strong formal presence.
