BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Pair of lamps; Spain, c. 1940.
Wrought iron.
They show slight wear consistent with their age.
Measurements: 115 (height without chain) x 120 cm (diameter).
An important pair of ceiling lamps, a magnificent example of Spanish artistic wrought iron from the first half of the 20th century. Made around 1940, their design is part of the historicist movement that revived and reinterpreted the great models of the past. Their aesthetic draws on the Neo-Gothic style, enriched with influences from the Spanish Revival and a distinct Mediterranean-style plant motif, characteristics that were widely popular. Constructed entirely of wrought iron, they feature a monumental composition organized around a solid central body from which numerous curved arms extend, linked by elegant volutes. The decoration, with a distinctly sculptural character, combines veined leaves and stylized flowers that envelop the candleholders in the shape of an open bud, evoking the ornamental tradition of the Late Gothic and Early Spanish Renaissance. The dark patina of the iron, enriched with traces of gilding, accentuates the wrought-iron’s modeling and enhances the ensemble’s artistic richness.

Due to the quality of its craftsmanship, its generous proportions, and the balance of its design, this pair transcends its utilitarian function to become an outstanding work of decorative wrought iron. It stands as a valuable testament to the resurgence of Spanish craftsmanship around 1940, a period in which the revival of historical styles reflected a growing interest in reclaiming national artistic traditions and the value of artisanal crafts.
