BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Modular shelving unit attributed to MEMPHIS, 1980s.
Solid granite shelves and a sturdy steel frame.
In very good condition, with slight signs of age and use.
Measurements: 280 (width) x 40 cm (depth).

The shelving unit is attributed to the Memphis movement due to its design as a piece with a strong architectural and sculptural character, where function is subordinated to a free and asymmetrical geometric composition. The repetition of black cylinders as supporting elements, combined with stone-effect laminate shelves, creates a striking contrast of materials and volumes, very characteristic of 1980s Italian design. The staggered arrangement of the shelves, the deliberate break from traditional symmetry, and the interplay between horizontal lines and cylindrical supports reflect the experimental language of Memphis, which rejected rationalism and championed furniture conceived as expressive objects. Although its color palette is more subdued than that of the most iconic pieces by Sottsass or Michele De Lucchi, it shares with them an interest in elementary geometric forms, modularity, and a sculptural presence—which justifies its association with the Memphis aesthetic movement or with Italian postmodern design of the 1980s.
