The Anfibio model is one of the iconic pieces of 1970s Italian design. Becchi reimagined the conventional sofa as a flexible, transformable structure capable of shifting from a wraparound seat to a sleeping surface. This dual function explains both the model’s name and its connection to an era in which Italian design sought new, more informal, and adaptable ways of living. Giovannetti itself considers it one of its most innovative and representative historic designs.

Its significance lies in the combination of comfort, freedom of use, and a striking sculptural presence. The padded sections replace the rigidity of traditional furniture and make the upholstery and the structure’s flexibility essential elements of the design. The fact that it remains in production and that an example is included in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York confirms its place in the history of international design.

Alessandro Becchi trained at the ISIA in Florence and developed a close collaboration with Giovannetti, focusing particularly on convertible furniture and sofa beds. He presented his work at the exhibition *Italy: The New Domestic Landscape*, held at MoMA in 1972, and the *Anfibio* remains his most renowned creation.
