The D4 armchair is one of the most refined expressions of Marcel Breuer’s explorations in tubular steel furniture. Its structure consists of a series of metal lines that intersect, articulate, and fold, creating a light, airy framework within the space, upon which the leather seat, backrest, and armrests seem to float.

The flexibility of the leather softens the geometric rigor of the frame. Arranged in wide bands and virtually devoid of superfluous elements, the material conforms to the body and acquires a warm patina with use. The reddish hue of the leather is a hallmark of the structure, which balances the industrial precision with a sense of casual comfort.

Breuer conceived the model in 1926–1927 and presented it as a chair suitable for boats, sports facilities, terraces, and gardens—uses linked to a modern, mobile lifestyle free from the conventions of bourgeois furniture. The D4 embodies the desire to reduce the traditional armchair to its essential components. It features an almost immaterial structure, defined by the strength of the metal tubing and the tension of the suspended surfaces. The result is a functional piece that also possesses remarkable sculptural power.

Marcel Breuer was one of the leading figures of the Bauhaus, where he directed the furniture workshop from 1924 to 1928. Inspired by the lightness and strength of the steel tubing used in bicycles, he developed a new typology of furniture suitable for industrial production. His work as a designer and architect is represented in institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Bauhaus-Archiv in Berlin.
