BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

ALFRED CHAMBON (Ixelles, 1884–1973).
Side table.
Walnut, burl walnut, and metal accents.
Measurements: 48.5 x 45 x 45 cm.

The side table up for auction is a clear example of Alfred Chambon’s design language and, more broadly, of the luxury Brussels cabinetmaking that marked the transition from late Art Nouveau to early Art Deco, developed between approximately 1915 and 1940. Chambon was an architect and designer, the son of interior decorator Alban Chambon, and his furniture is characterized by the combined use of fine woods with metal accents, particularly bronze and copper.

Likewise, the piece stands out for its understated lines and balanced proportions, representative of the refinement of Art Deco-inspired French furniture. The structure, with an almost cubic plan and resting on slender truncated-pyramid legs topped with bronze feet, combines mahogany veneers with a striking burl veneer on the front, whose grain creates a rich decorative effect. The top, framed by a thin brass molding, and the discreet metal fillets running along the perimeter accentuate the piece’s geometric elegance. The upper drawer and lower door, fitted with understated bronze handles, reflect the pursuit of functionality and formal refinement characteristic of Alfred Chambon, one of the leading figures in Belgian furniture design of the first half of the 20th century, whose work successfully integrated traditional craftsmanship with a modern, French-influenced aesthetic.
