The DS5 sideboard, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, is one of the most iconic pieces of furniture created by the Scottish architect and designer, whose vision revolutionized the transition from the Arts & Crafts movement to modern design. This edition was produced by Cassina as part of its prestigious “I Maestri” collection, dedicated to reviving and manufacturing—under official license—the most important works in the history of design. Manufactured in Italy during the 1990s, the DS5 combines Cassina’s extraordinary cabinetmaking quality with Mackintosh’s unmistakable geometric language. Its solid wood structure, stained in a deep, rich tone, is organized through straight lines and architectural proportions, while the central panel of leaded glass featuring a floral motif provides the delicate organic contrast characteristic of the designer.
The piece offers ample storage space thanks to its doors, drawers, and upper shelves, making it as functional as it is decorative. Its sculptural presence allows it to blend seamlessly into both classic and contemporary interiors, making it one of the most sought-after reissues in the “I Maestri” collection. This piece retains Cassina’s original screen-printed markings, along with Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s signature and its production number, visible on the underside of the cabinet—elements that certify its authenticity as an official reissue.
Charles Rennie Mackintosh achieved international recognition following his participation in the 1900 Vienna Secession Exhibition, where his style exerted a notable influence on Viennese Modernism. Among his most celebrated designs are the furnishings created for the Willow Tea Rooms. Today, his works are part of the collections of institutions such as the Hunterian Art Gallery in Glasgow, MoMA and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, as well as the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Tate, and the Design Museum in London.
