Christian Dell was one of the most influential industrial designers and metalworkers of 20th-century Germany, recognized as a key figure in the consolidation of modern design and closely associated with the principles of the Bauhaus and Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity). Trained as a silversmith at the Sächsische Kunstgewerbeschule in Weimar, he enrolled at the Bauhaus between 1922 and 1925, where he worked in the metal workshop under the direction of László Moholy-Nagy. In 1926, he was appointed head of the metal workshop at the Kunstschule in Frankfurt, where he designed the lamps that would eventually become his most famous creations. Initially manufactured by the firm Gebrüder Kaiser & Co.
