BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

MAX SAUZE (France, 1933–2014).
“Cassiopée” ceiling lamp.
Chrome-plated metal.
In very good condition.
Measurements: 50 x 50 x 50 cm.
Designed by Max Sauze, the “Cassiopée” ceiling lamp is one of the most representative models of the French designer’s work and a magnificent example of the sculptural language that characterized his oeuvre. Initially trained as a painter and sculptor, Sauze brought to his lighting designs a spatial concept based on modular repetition, geometry, and the interplay between light and space, transforming each piece into a true luminous sculpture.
Crafted from lacquered metal, the lamp consists of a series of assembled geometric elements that create an airy, transparent structure. Far from concealing the light source, the design makes use of the empty spaces to multiply the lighting effects, projecting shadows and reflections that transform the perception of volume and lend the piece a marked visual dynamism. The “Cassiopée” model, whose name evokes the constellation of the same name, fully embodies the Space Age aesthetic and the technological optimism that characterized design in the late 1960s and the 1970s. During this period, lighting ceased to be viewed as a mere functional element and became a true focal point of the domestic space, incorporating influences from kinetic sculpture, optical art, and contemporary architecture.
Max Sauze’s work occupies a unique place within 20th-century French design. In contrast to the decorative opulence of other movements, he developed a design vocabulary based on constructive simplicity, serial repetition, and the honesty of materials, creating pieces of great visual sophistication through seemingly elementary means.
