Otto Zapf’s work is characterized by a rational and ergonomic approach, in which modularity, ease of use, and structural efficiency take center stage. His philosophy, summed up in the phrase “Design reaches its peak when form, function, and price are in balance,” reflects a deeply functionalist vision that places him among the most influential figures in German industrial design of the second half of the 20th century.

Otto Zapf was one of the most innovative Czechoslovak industrial designers of the 20th century, particularly renowned for his contributions to modular furniture and office design. He began his professional career in 1956 and, in 1959, founded the firm Vitsœ + Zapf together with Danish entrepreneur Niels Vitsœ; the company was created to produce the famous furniture designed by Dieter Rams for Braun. Although he left the company in the late 1960s, his involvement was pivotal in the firm’s early years; today, it remains a benchmark of German design. In 1967, he presented an innovative collection of fiberglass furniture, including the Sofalette, Arcadia, Comudus, and Column Table series—pieces that explored new materials and foreshadowed the organic and technological design characteristic of the Space Age. Shortly thereafter, he developed the Softline System, a revolutionary modular storage and display system based on vinyl-covered metal frames, whose flexibility caught the attention of Knoll. In 1973, he joined Knoll International, where he designed the Zapf Office System, considered one of the first textile panel systems for open-plan offices. This modular furniture transformed the planning of workspaces thanks to its versatility and adaptability, marking a milestone in the development of the contemporary office and establishing Knoll as a leader in this sector.
