Designed in 1958 for Tramo, the “Manila” table lamp belongs to Miguel Milá’s early creative period and stands as a prominent example of the renewal of postwar Spanish design. Conceived with a minimalist and fully functional aesthetic, the piece reflects the designer’s interest in reducing the object to its essential elements, combining structural simplicity, technical rationality, and a refined attention to the quality of light. Produced by Tramo, a company founded by Miguel Milá together with Francisco Ribas and Eduardo Pérez-Ulibarri, the Manila lamp is part of a small group of designs that marked the birth of contemporary industrial design in Spain and foreshadowed its creator’s international career.
Miguel Milá began his studies at the School of Architecture, though he soon left to work at the firm of Federico Correa and Alfonso Milà. In 1958, he established himself as an independent industrial and interior designer. In the early 1960s, he witnessed the birth of Spanish industrial design, and throughout his long career he has been awarded the ADI FAD Delta de Oro Prize six times, the first of which was in 1961 for the “TMC” lamp. He was also awarded the National Design Prize in 1987, the Cross of Sant Jordi in 1993, and the CoNCA National Prize for Culture in 2010.
