The table features an elegant rectangular top with a perimeter skirt; its understated structure serves as a frame for an extraordinary composition of glazed ceramic tiles in relief. The ceramic surface, conceived as a true work of art integrated into the furniture, displays a rich interplay of textures, volumes, and chromatic nuances that make the piece a standout example of the dialogue between design and the decorative arts characteristic of French production in the second half of the 20th century.
Roger Capron was one of the most influential figures in 20th-century artistic ceramics. Fascinated by drawing from childhood, he studied at the School of Applied Arts in Paris between 1939 and 1943. After completing his studies, he combined teaching with his artistic practice until, in 1946, he settled in Vallauris, a historic center of French ceramics, where he founded the Atelier Callis, considered one of the main driving forces behind the region’s ceramic renaissance following World War II.
In 1952, he acquired an old, abandoned ceramics factory in Vallauris, which he restored and transformed into a major production center. In just a few years, the factory achieved significant international recognition thanks to the technical quality and originality of its designs. During the 1960s and 1970s, Capron produced a wide range of furniture clad with ceramic panels, collaborating with architects and designers to create tables, sideboards, and decorative pieces that are now among the most sought-after works of his career. His career was recognized with numerous awards, including the Gold Medal at the Milan Triennial (1954), the Silver Medal at Cannes (1955), two Gold Medals at the Brussels Architectural Ceramics Exhibition (1957 and 1958), the French Ministry of Culture Award (1970), and the Prix Spécial de l’Architecture (1980).
