Designed by Giotto Stoppino for Tronconi in 1976, the “Drop” table lamp is one of the most iconic designs of the Italian Space Age. Its characteristic inverted teardrop silhouette, crafted from glazed opal glass, appears to float atop four small, hemispherical chrome-plated metal legs, creating an attractive contrast between the organic softness of the shade and the geometric precision of the base. The light diffuses evenly through the opal glass, creating a warm, enveloping glow that enhances its sculptural character. True to Stoppino’s design language, it combines formal innovation, functionality, and refined simplicity, becoming an iconic piece of 1970s Italian design and an excellent example of the futuristic aesthetic that defined that decade.

Giotto Stoppino was an Italian architect and designer, a key figure in the evolution of modern design in Italy. Trained in Milan’s architectural milieu, he worked alongside leading masters of the modern movement before forging his own path, marked by an exploration of form, function, and the relationship between object and space. He is particularly renowned for his lighting designs, furniture, and modular systems—including iconic pieces such as the Altar lamp and the 555 lamp—as well as for his collaborations with firms such as Acerbis and Kartell. His work is an integral part of the history of Italian design due to its balance of architectural rigor, technical innovation, and a refined aesthetic sensibility.
