The table up for auction fully reflects the design philosophy of José Zanine Caldas, for whom furniture should arise from a deep understanding of wood and an absolute respect for its natural qualities. The thick tabletop, with its clean lines, is marked by sculptural elements: two large blocks of solid wood, preserved with their irregular contours, which evoke the organic strength of the original log. Far from concealing the material’s natural marks, Zanine transforms them into the piece’s primary aesthetic value, establishing a dialogue between the rational geometry of the tabletop and the almost primitive expressiveness of the base. This fusion of craftsmanship, sculpture, and functionality—combined with the use of high-quality woods and the celebration of their natural qualities—constitutes one of the Brazilian designer’s most recognizable hallmarks and a magnificent example of his contribution to 20th-century modern design.

José Zanine Caldas was a self-taught architect, designer, sculptor, and landscape architect, known as the “Master of Wood.” His work, admired by architects such as Oscar Niemeyer and Lucio Costa, represents a unique synthesis of traditional Brazilian craftsmanship and modern techniques. His works are represented in major international collections, including the Centre Pompidou and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
