Pair of “Apollo” armchairs, designed by Robert Tillberg for Overmann in 1972. Its smoked PVC frame, with its enveloping and sculptural lines, supports a seat upholstered in bouclé wool, creating a particularly appealing hallmark of contrast between the dark transparency of the plastic material and the warmth of the fabric. The “Apollo” is closely associated with the interior design of Raphael Raffel, one of the leading figures in 20th-century French interior design. Raffel used a model of this very armchair in the decoration of his Parisian apartment in 1980, a fact that places the “Apollo” within a specific lineage of late-20th-century European design and interior design.
Robert Tillberg (1920–2013) was a Swedish architect, furniture designer, and entrepreneur whose career had a decisive influence on the evolution of interior design for the naval and cruise ship industries. Trained in Stockholm in architecture and furniture design, he expanded his knowledge of cabinetmaking, upholstery, textiles, and materials, and studied under the renowned Swedish designer Carl Malmsten.During his early professional years, he worked for G.A. Berg, a company specializing in marine equipment, where he began designing furniture for ships. In 1964, he took on the comprehensive design of the M/S Kungsholm for the Swedish American Line, a project that cemented his position as one of the leading naval interior designers of his generation. He subsequently developed numerous projects for major cruise lines and founded the Tillberg Design studio, which would become an international benchmark in ship interior design.
