BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Silvio Cavatorta (Italy, 1899–1957).
Sideboard with mirror, Italy, ca. 1955.
Veneered wood, brass, metal, glass, and mirror.
Features six drawers, a glass shelf, and an adjustable rectangular mirror.
Surface refinished and hand-polished.
Measurements: 118 x 188 x 48.5 cm.

An elegant sideboard designed by Silvio Cavatorta, representative of the refinement achieved by postwar Italian furniture. The piece combines a low base with six drawers and a lightweight upper section consisting of a glass shelf and a large, swiveling rectangular mirror—a design that introduces transparency and verticality into a composition with a striking architectural presence.

Particularly striking is the combination of the warmth of the wood and the brass details, found both on the handles and on the slender supporting structure. The highly stylized, slightly flared legs help to visually lighten the piece’s volume, while the suspended mirror and glass shelf allow it to function equally well as a sideboard, chest of drawers, or vanity. This model is documented in the specialized market with virtually identical dimensions and is dated to the mid-1950s.

Silvio Cavatorta was a singular figure in Italian design in the immediate postwar period. At the helm of the Roman firm Cavatorta, he developed, throughout the 1940s and 1950s, furniture characterized by formal restraint, structural precision, and the use of refined materials, anticipating a conception of luxury based more on quality and proportion than on ornamentation. His work is part of the renewal of Italian furniture design that preceded the great international boom of “Made in Italy,” combining traditional craftsmanship with a progressive, modern refinement.
