The present sculpture is a good quality sample of a common custom in the 19th century. In the surroundings of the Academies of Fine Arts, and the boom of the valuation of the ancient Greek and Roman statuary, an enormous quantity of models were made in plaster "copying" examples known at that time by the connoisseurs of works of the Antiquity. The so-called "Discoforo" (Greek for "he who carries the disk") is considered a lost sculpture of Polyclitus, and a large number of copies were made in Roman times (one of which is preserved in the Prado Museum in Madrid), which are those that are preserved and served as models for these works. The classical sculptor Polyclitus (active 460 - 420 BC) was known for his famous canon, and highly appreciated in the nineteenth century.
