Sculpture in carved and polychrome wood representing Christ crucified. The figure of Christ shows a detailed sculptural work that highlights the dramatism and humanity of the character, characteristic of the sacred art. Jesus is observed with his arms extended on a dark wooden cross, his head slightly tilted to one side and his face marked by the expression of suffering, but also of serenity. The anatomy is meticulous, with subtly defined muscles and bones, conveying realism and naturalness. The details of the wounds, such as the nails in the hands and feet, as well as the lacerations on the body, evidence the physical torment of the crucifixion.
The purity cloth that covers Christ's waist is delicately worked, showing folds and movements that provide dynamism and volume. The polychromy, although it shows signs of wear due to the passage of time, continues to be a key tool to emphasize the expression and the wounds, achieving a moving visual effect.
This type of representation, deeply emotional and devotional, has been of utmost importance for the Spanish school, especially in the 16th and 17th centuries, where artists such as Juan Martínez Montañés and Gregorio Fernández elevated this type of sculpture to the maximum expression of realism. The Spanish sculptural tradition around the Passion of Christ has had a lasting and universal influence, being pieces like this one a relevant example of the deep religious fervor and technical mastery that characterize Spanish art.
This sculpture reflects not only a work of devotion, but also a testimony to the splendor of Spanish sacred art and its ability to move the faithful through drama, impeccable technique and the representation of human suffering. Its value lies in its role in the artistic and spiritual history of Spain, where the representation of Christ on the cross has been a central theme for centuries.
