BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
It follows models of ALESSANDRO ALGARDI (Bologna, 1595 - Rome,1654). Italy, XVIII century.
"Living Christ".
Patinated bronze.
Measurements: 31,5x 19,5 cm.
This magnificent Crucifixion in patinated bronze shows a clearly baroque interpretation of the human body, influenced by late Roman classicism and the refined style of Alessandro Algardi. The muscles are suggested in a naturalistic manner, but without the extreme tension of Tenebrist pathos. Here, the serpentine form and the twisting of the limbs give the figure a sense of restrained vitality, and the head, slightly tilted to the right and raised, directs a pleading gaze towards the sky. This inclination breaks the frontality and reinforces the pious emotion. The face, in the tradition of Algardi, is serene and noble, without the dramatic theatricality of other baroque sculptors. The purity cloth tied on the left side provides additional movement that complements the serpentine line of the body. This slight twist of the torso, accompanied by a gentle twisting of the hips and legs, produces a dynamic and elegant composition, with Algardi's characteristic sobriety, which contrasted with Bernini's exuberance. It is a living Christ, not yet expiring, which reinforces the intention to emphasize the moment of ultimate sacrifice and prayer, rather than the drama of the last breath. The polished surface and the dark patina finish give the bronze a noble and devotional appearance, highlighting lights and shadows that model the anatomy.
