Self-taught at first, Santiago de Santiago began to study sculpture in France, Italy and Japan, where he not only cultivated this genre but also ventured into the treatment of painting. Throughout his career he has been distinguished by a great handling of the sculptural technique for which he has made different busts for important people in the world of politics, culture, etc., highlighting the busts made to the Royal Family at different times of his life. Also noteworthy are his public monuments that can be found both in Spain, highlighting the Open Air Museum of Tortosa (Tarragona) which consists of a central monolith made to 7.5 m. high and about 48 sculptures scattered throughout the park, and in other countries including Mexico, Denmark, Japan, Czechoslovakia, Russia, and Greece among others. Throughout his active career in the art world, his work has been widely recognized through various awards, including the 1971 Princess Sofia Extraordinary Prize of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors. In 1972 he received the Gold and Brilliant Medal S.E.K., in 1976 the Military Cross with White Distinctive 1st Class, in 1982 the Gold and Brilliant Medal S.E.K. The Gold Medal for Merit at Work. The Institutional Trophy "Casa del Reloj", for the City Council of Madrid, District of Arganzuela in 2007. The European Golden Cross" awarded by the Spanish Association of European Promotion in 2010, The Kapital Award 2011 as "Best Sculptor. 2010.
