The LOVE series is a collection of sculptures created by American artist Robert Indiana. The first LOVE sculpture was created in 1970, but its origins date back six years earlier, when the Museum of Modern Art in New York commissioned Indiana to design a Christmas card. For these festive prints, Indiana produced the famous design we know today: the letters L, O, V, and E in a serif typeface, stacked one on top of the other. The original LOVE sculpture—now housed at the Indianapolis Museum of Art—was an immediate success when it was unveiled in 1970. Over the course of several decades, Indiana would create more than 50 versions of the sculpture for locations around the world, from New York City and Philadelphia to Singapore and Taipei.
Robert Indiana was an American costume designer, painter, sculptor, and stamp designer associated with the Pop Art movement. Indiana has also worked on set and costume designs for plays. His works employ symbols and words from everyday life painted in the vivid colors characteristic of Pop Art, and they depict American culture and life in an ironic way, often containing political critiques of American society.
