Sculpture from the Italian Grand Tour where the characteristic winged phallus or "fascinus" is symbolized, which represented, in ancient Rome, the incarnation of the divine phallus, remedy against envy or the evil eye.
Roman myths suggest that this phallus represented an incarnation of the male generative power located in the home. For example, when a general celebrated a triumph, the Vestals hung an effigy of the "fascinus" on the bottom of his chariot to protect him from envy.
Phallic amulets, often winged, were common in Roman culture, appearing as jewelry objects, reliefs or lamps. The "fascinus" was considered to protect especially male children and generals. The protective function of the phallus is usually related to virile and regenerative powers, although in most cases the shame or laughter they provoked is the means by which the evil eye is deflected.
